It could hardly be more fitting that Uzupis' Independence Day falls on April Fools. And so it was that in the year of our lord 2001, a not entirely solemn delegation unveiled this statue at the heart of the dotty district. The trumpet-touting angel provides something of a focal point for the area - the idea was to express artistic freedom after the long totalitarian winter. Local sculptor Romas Vilciauskas did the honours, and his piece has taken its place alongside the goodly Frank Zappa as one of the city's best loved monuments.
