From some angles it looks like the founder of Vilnius was a blind chappie who was led to walk over a cliff by his mischievous steed. But cast aside such preconceptions as appearances can be deceptive. The actual legend holds that the Duke was haunted by an Iron Wolf. This dream was interpreted by the resident Getafix, who encouraged his sovereign to found a city as formidable as the mighty wolf. Today's monument (f. 1996), may not be made of iron (in fact it's made of bronze that was confiscated by Lithuanian border officials - strange but true) but it is a rather magnificent addition to Cathedral Square.
