Town Hall

Dating back to the 15th century, the rather modest, classical incarnation of Vilnius' Town Hall was built at the end of the 18th century and has always been the historical, cultural and social centre of town. For over a hundred years it was used by various theatre troupes, and housed the Lithuanian Art Museum from the end of the Second World War up to independence in 1991. Now it serves as a space for city ceremonies, exhibits, and concerts. The Artists' Palace is here, where you can view gallery art, and a tourist information centre. Keep an eye out for the unfortunate plaque commemorating Dubya's visit in 2003: "Anyone who would choose Lithuania as an enemy has also made an enemy of the United States of America." And vice versa? Watch your back, LT!
