National Drama Theatre

Founded in 1940, some 280 performances have since graced the stage of Lithuania's preeminent theatre. In 1998, the theatre was granted its title as the National Drama Theatre (having previously been known as the 'Academical Theatre.') Today the theatre's repertoire consists of classical dramaturgy, the works of 20th century dramatists (Sophocles, W. Shakespeare, F. Garcia Lorca, S. Beckett, B. Strauss, F. Dostojevsky) and plays by contemporary Lithuanian writers (S. Parulskis, H. Kunčius and others). The sculpture of the three muses, by sculptor S. Kuzma, which leans out above the theatre has become symbolic of Vilnius.
