Museum of Genocide Victims

I know this is an oudated review, but I saw this museum back in April 1993 when it was very new. I had a penpal from Kaunas who took me there and throughout the city where I got a great education in post-Soviet bloc life. All these years later as I am putting together a scrapbook of my photos, I still remember this museum vividly. And I remember my penpal choking up as she told her own stories. I wish we could package this museum up and share it with others who won't get to Vilnius!

Frank Zappa

I went to see it and met some people from Germany who also love Zappa's music. It's great that there is such a monument.

The most important thing we did in Vilnius was visit this museum. Very powerful.

Museum of Genocide Victims

Horrifying. Humbling. Absolutely the most important and compelling thing we saw in Vilnius.

Trakai Island Castle

A stunning place to visit. This would be my perfect home (if the weather was better than when we visited!)

Amber Museum-Gallery

This is part shop, part museum, so learned a lot and took home some nice, small pieces.

Frank Zappa

What a surprise to find a memorial to the great Frank Zappa in the centre of Vilnius! With all that I learned from my visit to the Baltics combined with my love of the music of Frank Zappa the connections seem obvious to me now. I hope many Vilnius visiters get to visit this unusual special place if only for a couple of minutes while walking around the old town like I did.

Church of SS Peter & Paul

Church of St. Peter & Paul's was easily one of the highlights of my trip to VIlnius. There's a serene majesty about the place and I highly recommend you drop by for some quiet reflection if you are in Vilnius.

Frank Zappa

The 'square' surrounding Frank Zappa's monument recently got a moderate facelift thanks to the initiative of some enterprising art school students who painted over some of the less inspired 'illegal' artworks, replacing them with a bunch of original works. This is something that's needed to happen for a while in our opinion and the space looks better now than it did before.

Gediminas Tower

Best time to enjoy the view is in the late afternoon, because in the morning the sun will be behind the old town making the sight (and pictures) not too good. Climbing on foot is quite steep but short.

Contemporary Art Centre

Last time I was there they had a sculpture of a 9 year old kid that looked so real I had leave...

Contemporary Art Centre

I've been to SMC a few times and I'm always a little disappointed by the curator's predilection towards video art (which has been painfully boring in my experience). In fact, if you go out and video one thing for 36 hours, you can probably get a show here. Aside from that, you'll see some cool stuff in here, but you're right - the white walls can be a bit much. All told, it's a good museum, cheap, and definitely worth a visit.

Gediminas Tower

The manual ascent really isn't bad. Balls to the funicular, go for a freakin' walk people. And if you're a cheapskate (like myself) you can enjoy great views from the top of Castle Hill without necessarily going to the top of the tower. Good place to hang out in general.

Lele Puppet Theatre

Turns out some of their 'adult' performances, which occur in the evening, are puppet-free. It was a letdown, but I'd give them another crack - it's a cool theatre and I did catch part of a morning performance for children which was inspired and looked like a lot of fun for everyone.

Frank Zappa

Sure, we all love Frank and mourn his passing, but this monument doesn't really do him justice and the likeness is a bit iffy, sorry to say. And what's with the really tall cylinder his bust is on? Frank was the King of Quirk, but this monument sort of fails to honor that--it's just aloof and ultimately head-scratching. Certainly more could be done with this space. Get out your brushes and spray cans and get to it.
