Autumn Equinox Move over Wicker Man, it's Autumn Equinox time in Vilinus and that means the fiery spectacle of 12-metre tall burning effigies of mythological creatures. Every year at the end of September the good burghers of Vilinus gather together to celebrate the Equinox, a time, when in centuries past, human sacrifices would be made to appease the Gods and in the hope for miracles. Fortunately, you're unlikely to end up as a sacrificial lamb these days and instead you can take it easy and enjoy a great line up of concerts, revelry and pyrotechnic magic. The highlight is the the International Festival of Fire Sculptures by the river Neris. As the 12-metre straw figurines burn, they explode to release dozens of fireworks.
The event celebrates the founder of Lithuania, Duke Gediminas, the 14th century monarch and a fully paid up member of the Pagan order. A favourite pastime of his was roasting young Christan girls alive. Nice chap. when - Third week in September where - Vilinus City Centre, banks of river Neris more info - click here |
