Autumn Equinox

Move over Wicker Man, it's Autumn Equinox time in Vilinus and that means the fiery spectacle of 12-metre tall burning effigies of mythological creatures. Every year at the end of September the good burghers of Vilinus gather together to celebrate the Equinox, a time, when in centuries past, human sacrifices would be made to appease the Gods and in the hope for miracles. Fortunately, you're unlikely to end up as a sacrificial lamb these days and instead you can take it easy and enjoy a great line up of concerts, revelry and pyrotechnic magic. The highlight is the the International Festival of Fire Sculptures by the river Neris. As the 12-metre straw figurines burn, they explode to release dozens of fireworks.

The event celebrates the founder of Lithuania, Duke Gediminas, the 14th century monarch and a fully paid up member of the Pagan order. A favourite pastime of his was roasting young Christan girls alive. Nice chap.

Talking Doors

If you see someone garbling to themselves in front of a building this month in Vilnius don't be too quick to call the men in the white coats, as they could be talking part in the 'Talking Doors' interactive art project. Talking Doors aims to help people rediscover the city's landmark churches, museums and other public buildings. Attached to the 'front door' of each building taking part will be an audio recording capturing the sounds, music and history of within its four walls. Visitors can record their voice onto the tape, so that they'll be leaving their mark on the whispering history of the city.
