This week Lithuanian authorities held up their position on genetically modified food by rejecting the application of a German company seeking to grow genetically modified rapeseed. Despite the affirmation that the rapeseed would be grown only for the purposes of research, authorities held firm in their opposition to GM crops and products in Lithuania. This latest decision keeps in line with the rejection of a similar proposal last year which would have initiated the growth of genetically modified potatoes in Lithuania, and reflects the current public opinion on the matter. According to a survey conducted by Fonitel, 63% of Lithuanians are opposed to the cultivation of GM crops in their country.
