As of today – 30 May – you’ve just over 100 days left before the gun fires and it’s off from the starting blocks at Vilnius’s Annual Marathon. So no excuses, there’s plenty of time to get into that extensive training routine of, er, staggering home from the pub instead of cadging a lift from your mate.
So for anyone who wants to do a bit more on the big day than spray a runner’s face with water as they fly by, you can now register as a participant via the website www.marathonas.It The marathon organisers insist the event’s for recreational runners and open to anyone of average fitness. You don’t have to do the full monty marathon of 43 km – you can downsize to a more manageable 21 km half-marathon or just show willing in the mini 4 km trot.
The competition gets going at 10am on 13 September and runners start and finish at Vilnius Cathedral Square, Šventaragio street. There’s medals for everyone who completes the race – but be warned you’ll have to do it within the five and half hour time limit. Oh! Pulled a muscle just thinking about the trauma of it all!
